Planned Giving

Planned giving, very simply, is gift planning. It is the assets accumulated, in one's life, as opposed to current income. It is the process of making a gift at the right time for the right purpose, using the right method.

Examples of gifts include:

Life Insurance. Due to special tax treatment, a valuable planned gift.
Charitable Gift Annuities. Depositing capital with your charity, allows you a guaranteed tax advantaged payment for life and immediate tax credit.
Gifts of Securities. This gift is the most tax-effective way to make a donation.
Charitable Remainder Trusts. Transferring cash or property to a trust, enables you to receive income from it for life, with an immediate tax credit.
RRSP/RRIF's. Designating a charity as the beneficiary you are not subject to probate fees or taxes.
Gifts of Real Estate.
Gifts of Charitable Gift Annuities.

Making a significant charitable gift can be one of the most enjoyable experiences in life, as well as providing some attractive benefits:

  • Provides options that are best for your financial plans and circumstances as well as help you plan for retirement.
  • Satisfaction of knowing your influence will continue after death.
  • Provide a long-term steady stream of income for you or a family member.
  • Receive a higher rate of return than many current investments.
  • Helps you to reduce your federal and provincial income taxes.
  • Enables you to tailor your gift to your long-term estate plans and assure you of a future contribution.
  • Allows for immediate or deferred tax credits and can help you reduce capital gains taxes and probate fees.
  • Achieve your philanthropic objectives.

Please inform us when you are considering a bequest to the Semiahmoo House Society, so we can thank you personally and plan accordingly. It is suggested that if you make a specific bequest to SHS, you allow us the freedom to administer it.  The Society’s needs can change rapidly, and an unrestricted gift wills allows us the flexibility of using the bequest in the area that needs it most. If you wish to provide a Bequest gift, please contact your Lawyer and the Director of Development of the Semiahmoo Foundation.

Common Questions

Have I selected the best way to make my gift?

A straight-out gift has its advantages, but sometimes a deferred gift that provides lifetime income can be more practical and beneficial. Giving through a will, an insurance policy, stocks, or trusts are possibilities to consider.

What are the tax consequences of my gift?

Making a 'tax-wise' gift can actually enable you to give more than you might otherwise be able to do. This is especially true of assets that contain long-term capital gain.

Can I designate my gift to a specific area of the Society?

Absolutely!

Should I seek counsel from a competent advisor?

Yes, we strongly recommend seeking counsel from a qualified professional. It is essential that your estate planning be tailored to your situation as you consider the needs of the charity, the ways to maximize the tax deduction and the financial needs of yourself and your family.
